Defender of the Faith was a title the Pope gave to Henry VIII, in Henry's rebuke of Martin Luther. Years later, when Henry sought a divorce from Queen Catherine, the Pope refused, so he broke away, started his own church, and kept the moniker "Defender of the Faith". All English kings & queens since Henry VIII have held that title.
