Yes because if they can’t get you for your crimes they’ll get you on tax evasion.

But the really smart criminals use taxes to money launder. I’ve read somewhere but not sure if true, that at some point the Russian organized crime figured out that they could overpay their taxes then get a refund. Refund would show up as coming from US treasury. Voila, clean money.
