Over 60 years ago, conventional scientists taught that Neanderthals were slouching, subhuman brutes—just another evolutionary link bridging the gap between animals and people. But recent research calls such a claim into question once again.
According to evolutionary theory, Neanderthals lived 34,000 to 400,000 years ago, but creationists would say they lived only about 4,000 years ago, shortly after the Flood (early Ice Age). Fossils from this extensive archaic people group have been found from Israel to Siberia, from Wales to Western Eurasia.
Through the decades, discoveries and research have clearly revealed that Neanderthals were just as human as you and your neighbor. They cooked and ate crabs (possibly seasoned with wild herbs!),1 made practical tools and equipment,2 and used a “sophisticated” method to produce tar.3 People have done these things throughout history and still do them today.
Now another fascinating clue has been found pointing to Neanderthals belonging to the human population. In a Russian cave, researchers discovered what they believe to be a 60,000-year-old Neanderthal molar tooth with a hole in it. A LiveScience article has dubbed the discovery “the oldest evidence of intentional dentistry to date.”4
During the Neanderthal’s lifetime, part of the tooth began to rot. So, they treated it like any modern dentist would, drilling a hole to clear away the rotten tissue and filling the cavity to avoid further damage. Clearly, whoever performed the feat “had the brains to recognize this painful tooth cavity could be treated and possessed the fine motor skills to successfully execute the procedure.”4 The scientists added in PLOS One, “Evidence suggests they cared for sick, injured, and elderly group members, with possible use of medicinal plants.”5
Unsurprisingly, Neanderthals continue to reveal distinctly human traits, as would be expected on the basis of God’s creative activity on the sixth day of the creation week: creating mankind in His own image (Genesis 1:27).6,7 These competent dentists were 100% humans.
So much for Neanderthals being our subhuman ancestors.

When conventional scientists call a fossil an early step in animal evolution, the claim may rest more on a reading of the fossil than on the fossil itself. In a new study, sharper images revealed that what had been identified as animal trails were actually fossilized microbes.1
The study reexamined tiny fossils from Brazil’s Tamengo Formation. Earlier work had treated some marks on the fossils as burrows made by small, wormlike animals. If that interpretation were true, those marks would have placed active animal life in the Ediacaran, below the Cambrian rocks where many complex sea creatures appear.2 But when the new study’s team used microtomography, nanotomography, and Raman spectroscopy to look inside the fossils, they found cells, coiled filaments, walls, organic matter, and pyrite. These are not marks of animals crawling through mud but are instead algae and bacteria preserved as body fossils.1
Trace fossils are indirect clues. A footprint, trail, or burrow does not preserve the animal itself. It preserves an effect. Engineers know the difference between a machine and a mark left by a machine. A scrape on a floor may suggest motion, but it cannot identify the device that left it without better data. In the same way, a fossil mark must be tested by shape, chemistry, and setting before rewriting life’s history.
This discovery weakens a common evolutionary move: using gaps to predict missing ancestors. Conventional scientists often look below the Cambrian for simpler animals that could lead to the sudden rise of many complex body plans. Yet this study shows creatures that are anything but simple, removing one supposed example. Better tools did not strengthen the earlier evolutionary reading. They weakened it.
Good data should be welcomed. But scientists should also be careful to not just see what they want to see based on that data. As this reevaluated research demonstrates, doing so can lead to erroneous deductions.
Clearly, claims about animal origins can change when fossils are checked more closely. The conclusion jumped from “early animals were here” to “microbial communities were here.” When fossils are judged by observed shape, chemistry, and setting, they not only are more likely to be interpreted accurately but also better reflect truly empirical science. Fully formed, fossilized life says less about evolution and more about the ordered complexity God placed in living systems from the beginning.

After investing so much time and effort to understand how body parts interact, scientists keep turning up new and unforeseen connections—often when they ask the right questions. New and strange developments inspired a team to ask wacky questions about a unique white blood cell called Ly6Chi. And they found some profound answers.
Publishing in Cell Reports, German and U.S. scientists asked why the same cells showed up both in mouse brain and gut.1 They also asked why mouse brains stopped certain activities after antibiotics erased the helpful bacteria from mouse gut contents. The team knew Ly6Chi cells were present in a region of the brain’s hippocampus called the dentate gyrus (DG) that builds new cells as mice learn new things. This also happens in other mammals including man. What’s going on with these cells?
Ly6Chi cells belong to the immune system where they help immune surveillance. When mice or men get an infection, these cells also help activate body defenses. New results demonstrate that these special cells help the gut and brain communicate.
The study authors wrote, “Adult neurogenesis has been linked to hippocampus-dependent cognitive function, and it is required for memory resolution and for proper pattern separation in the DG of the hippocampus.”1 Ly6Chi cells play a key role in the DG, and therefore in memory and pattern resolution.
But they also play a key role in the gut. The Cell Reports authors wrote, “Therefore, we hypothesized the presence of a common mediator, which signals from the periphery to the brain, and that this messenger is affected by antibiosis and can be restored by exercise and probiotic treatment.”1 Hypothesis confirmed: Ly6Chi cells are that mediator.
The research team found that antibiotics zapped Ly6Chi cells from the gut and elsewhere, but probiotics brought them back into action. Mice that consumed probiotics or exercised on a running wheel reinvigorated their Ly6Chi cell population and hippocampus brain activity.
Only five years ago, few would have imagined such a complicated array of functions for just one cell. This research confirms that what enters the mouth to feed or starve gut microbes also influences brain function. It reveals that specific cells travel from the gut to tell the brain what’s going on with the microbes down there.
You never know what remarkable discovery waits for an inquisitive mind to ask the right question—even a wacky one.
