Its a nothing burger.
ITER (Hot Fusion) has been 5 years way for over 60 years, it does not produce more energy than is put into it.
The ITER secretary general has admitted its a scam a month ago, its only success being to attract huge sums of money to study it and give physicists great and lucrative careers.

...well duh...
...the politicians can't pilfer all of the money....
Fun fact: This facility was used for the set of the engine room in the first movie of the rebooted Star Trek. Lots of shiny stainless steel!
...where's u/Dr McCoy when we need him....
I saw it in a movie....Mr. Fusion.
...howls...
I've been reading articles about fusion reactors since the Popular Science or Popular Mechanics era. 50 years. It's like global warming, always 10 years away. I used to get excited as a youth, now not so much.
...perpetually on the verge of a breakthrough...
The odds are high that this is a distraction and not a real break through. If you do the math, this is not a practical method of energy generation.
Based on some easy to perform calculations, I concluded if one used this 200 laser method to generate 1.1 MJ (300 Watt-hr) on a large enough scale to power the US electrical grid in 2021, you will need 135 million gallons of (deuterium & tritium) water. Just saying.
...it is just another money laundering operation using "science" as the vehicle....
Higher probability than not. And we are suppose to wait 10 years to find out.
...sadly true....
...compelling addendum....
...if it were a "distraction"...
...I would think that this story would be getting more traction....
the Q in the photo certainly makes it interesting..
...I was wondering when someone would notice that....
...exactly....
...distractions need "star power"....
