Santa is based on St Nicholas who fought (literally) to keep the focus of the church on Jesus as the son of God. St Nicholas was famous for his generosity to the poor and giving gifts to children. I highly recommend Kirk Cameron's show "Saving Christmas" which dives into the history behind our Christmas traditions. It was informative and entertaining.

The story of Santa Claus gets really dark if you start to look into it.

The gifts weren't to the children, they were to the parents.FOR the children.

The muffin man is a tale that was told to warn children about an actual serial killer.
