I used to think it was a Roman Catholic thing as well, but according to Bible scholar Michael S Heiser, the date of Dec 25, although not Biblical, was proposed for other reasons by early church leaders, pre-Roman Catholic times. See NAKED BIBLE podcast Christmas episode from 1 or 2 years ago.
Technically it is a Roman Catholic thing as they are the reason for the current calander being used. I am Coptic Orthodox and we celebrate Christmas on January 7th as we use the old calander.
