The spike protein is created and circulates throughout body and then locks onto any ACE2 receptors that may be available. ACE2 receptors are present in many cell types and tissues including the lungs, heart, blood vessels, kidneys, liver and gastrointestinal tract. It is present in epithelial cells, which line certain tissues and create protective barriers. Also present in ovaries and testes.
