I used to do training for retail stores. Would be in front of 50 people and pick one to come up front, they never pushed back. Would ask them to do something they'd never consider doing if a stranger asked them and they'd do it. We called it "The Guy in the Front of the Room" (TGITFOTR) effect. Authority figure, you accept what they say unconditionally. It's no different than the majority of us agreeing with the Patriot Act when it was first proposed never considering most of it was 100% anti-Constitutional if we even tried to read it at all. But, TGITFOTR proposed it so we said OK.
