If I were the enemy, wouldn't a "harmless" test be something I wanted to schedule, when it was just a random, ordinary day?

If it works on a random Tuesday morning, it will probably work when I have something catastrophic scheduled. As Southwest Airlines demonstrated, they were running on 1980's grade hardware and software.

The other airlines may have a fancier user interface on top; but under that layer, is probably the same old software that was designed 40 years ago. Believe it or not, a LOT has changed in the last ~40 years.
