There were crazies - I remember one of the few other White kids unfortunately named Gaylin who always had a bad idea to try one day jumping off his roof with an umbrella... one fat kid, a lot of feral latch key fatherless 'baby thugs' but no retards and no fags until I moved to a White town in 1985. Like that meme - we searched for frogs, shot pellet guns, built forts and later half-pipes to skate/bmx. Didn't know how good we had it or that we were potentially the last ones.
