I saw that yesterday via email. (I had mine set to mikeroweworks - I never like being pushed in the Amazon direction, but there are certain items that just don't get stocked in brick and mortar anymore. So I figured if I am going to have to use it, someone should benefit. Anyway...) The email said over 10 years, it was $377M given. I was surprised because given their financial picture, I thought it would have been greater than roughly $40M per year. And once it was set up, what was the cost to run it? Not much. Something is up...
I think so too: something is up. With all the bigger companies announcing layoffs and then amz stopping the "smile." Too much coincidence.
Mine said $440 million worldwide. It's true they only give a pittance but it still pisses me off, that I don't have even that little choice in their corporate giving. Look at what they will be doing instead. Affordable housing. They've helped with 14,000 units. What kind? Were they making money with the providers, or will they be? Scholarships--for whom, at what schools, any strings attached? Food bank--ok, Amazon deals in lots of food and probably ends up with lots that has to be donated. I think this is all about simplifying their deductions and getting a return on wastage.
