I never understood the tattoo thing. My son has one that goes down the entire length of his arm [he's a senior chief in the Navy] and his lady friend has some on her arms too. To each his own, I guess, I never got one although I did think about it when I was in. I guess it's just a sign of personal independence, but I just don't think it looks good.
As a young boy of 10 I remember the Light House mission right next door to the 9to5 Liquor store. there were a number of poor ex sailors that hung out there. they had tattoo's and the were pretty old guys. I remember how the Hula girls looked on their sagging arm muscles, and thinking how much better they must have looked when those arms were younger and stronger.
