That's a bingo. Fun fact, VP has no authority to oversee military operations. But an Acting POTUS, exercising the powers of the presidency, does.

Who was Trump saluting in the helicopter after returning to the Executive Mansion?

POTUS only returns salutes. Never initiates to a subordinate.

Correct. And Pence was likely Acting POTUS for some time, at the very least when Trump was at Walter Reed in October 2020, and quite possibly prior to January 20, 2021 and even perhaps to this very day...
