Russia’s territory is so big and has relatively few natural barriers... it’s impossible to adequately defend it all. Even though the territory extends out to the pacific, there’s little chance they were going to be able to take on Japan in the Yellow Sea. This is why the country is so paranoid about defence. NATO moving into Ukraine is an existential threat to them. They can’t afford to lose it.
