Because she valued her income more than her life? We all have free will and live by the choices we make. Maybe better that you tell people of this experience instead of the alternative you suggested.

I often wondered, no one loves a child (of any age) more than the mother. Yet people will take advice from strangers, coworkers and bosses, newscasters but not from mom.
