In my experience they can be "very smart".

They are very smart about one thing or a few things at most, but somehow along the way did not think it through that they need to apply rigor to all things, not just South American Moth Behavior or whatever is their specialization.

So yes, they are stupid. But it has aspects of smart. Weird and fascinating, and also extremely annoying and dangerous.
