Staff at the NHS facility were so determined to push a pro-transgender policy that children who might not have been trans were treated as “collateral damage” by clinicians who labelled doubters “transphobic”, a whistleblower says.

Autistic children are all very anxious, so perhaps these kids heard that being anxious about oneself might mean they are in the wrong body. This draws them into the trans camp, where they find people welcoming them and treating them with "love" and acceptance. They are no longer misfits! They fit right in if they go along with the "treatments". This would be very hard to resist. Voila!
A good point and I think it goes further
Kids with Autism are often outcast to one degree or another. They don’t fit in all the time. This makes them vulnerable. In the past outcasts we’re primarily targeted by cults for recruitment, and I think that is an apt metaphor for the transgender lobby.
