This is an interesting phenomenon. I may have had something similar as the above scenario.
Several years back, during a family visit, I was in the midst of a deep sleep, when suddenly, a darkly hooded nightmare figure appeared, with its arms outstretched toward me, as if to choke me, having the intention of killing me. Immediately, I started kicking and screaming for all I was worth, and was so relieved when I was able to sit up awake, gasping for air. I heard my nephew upstairs, who screamed right after I did.
Later on next day, sister said the scream was "blood curdling." And SIL, a nurse, said that kind of sudden, severe nightmare is called a "night terror." My nephew had had a similar "night terror" at the same time as mine. He had been playing with some kind of occult game cards with his friends. I tried to advise him to get rid of them (the cards).
To my shock, when I turned my head while still gasping, I saw another SIL, wrapped in a blanket, with her arms outstretched towards me like the nightmare figure!! She hissed, "It's okayyyyy" and fled to another room.
My little brother awakened from sleep, and I asked him what he had experienced. He said my scream woke him up, and he felt the presence of something evil in the room. Sweat was trickling down the back of his neck and he said to himself, "Ah, let me turn to the light. . . " I was afraid to go back to sleep after that, so I didn't.
Next morning, nightmare SIL called out to me from the next room: "Do you know who I am?" (Yeah. . . Beelzebub?) "I'm coming to get you!" (Oh, please don't.)
She gave me a really fishy story about how she was supposedly walking to use the bathroom, when I suddenly "kicked" her in the ribs with my foot and "punched" her in the jaw with my fist. (Oh, really? I thought YOU attacked ME in my sleep. . .) I was deeply afraid to ever, ever travel to visit her and brother at their house.
Long story short: I have had several episodes of very traumatic experiences in life. At the time of the choking night terror, I was convinced that if I had not screamed and kicked myself awake, I might have been suffocated to death by whatever that THING was in my malevolent SIL.
I remember thinking, "Oh, now I know how they write horror stories. . ."
At the airport, brother asked me what happened. I was too afraid to tell him he was married to a demon. She woulda lied anyway.

Sounds like sleep paralysis. I get that occasionally.
