Trains derail all the time,usually it's no big deal. The spur lines in the us,are total crap in most areas. Normally they are only used a few times during harvest season. I've been stop at a crossing and seen wear the ties are washed out and every car dips and sways.
The other day I walked across some railroad tracks and stopped to look at them. They really seem kind of small and fragile to be holding up a heavy train with all of that speed. But, I don't really know, I'm not a biologist.
