Knew a train engineer a while back and we did talk about derailments. When the dispatcher was told about the firey axle he should have said to continue until you get to an area not so populated, then decouple the cars before and behind the cars on fire, separate them. Then hazmat, fire fighters, etc to assess how to put out the fire and see if possible how to empty those cars into other safe containers.
Blowing up cars with toxic chemicals, still in the area of other cars is the most stupid thing they could do.
I used to work with fire fighters. I never heard of lighting up toxic chemical before. When there is a spill, they use pick up powder to dry it and suck it up. This is ridiculous.
