Had the US bought the X2000 30 years ago, tracks allover the country would now have been in perfect condition with high speed trains everywhere. Without any significant cost beyond the usual maintenance.
Sure it wouldn't be any 200mph Shinkansen bullet trains, but at least up to 150mph capable of passing sharp turns without slowing down.
These tracks would also be suitable for the RC2 locomotive, allowing freight trains to go up to 100mph, perfectly safe.
Ease up some regulation and remove the minimum wage and there could be more but shorter trains, around 50 cars instead of 150, which heavily reduce the risk of pileups if something does go wrong.
Trains on the eastern corridor such as The pig (Acela express) and AMK-7 are already based on these locomotives, one of the few functional rail services in the US that doesn't suck.
