I would also suggest getting a wood burning stove and stock a few cords of wood for it. They only need to push a couple of buttons and people will be freezing to death.
I’ve had butane or propane for heat and cooking since the mid 70’s but as I’ve always told my kids ( adults now) always have a fireplace or something where you can light a fire and at least boil water—my oldest and I lived in a house in mountain country 5500’ altitude ( not too high but some cold winters) with only a fireplace as heat — spent a good part of the winter in main room ( encompassed kitchen/living/bathroom) with fire going in fireplace 24/7 from late October till March — he was 12-13 and rode his bike home from school at lunch to feed/stoke fire —chopped wood the cowboys brought us on weekends . He’s highly successful 6 figure salary with no college degree cause he’s smart, resourceful and can handle anything
Daughter knows how to wrap a well — thaw pipes/ wrap pipes / cook use power tools/baling wire and train a hunting dog — and build a fire
Teach your kids everything— you never know when things will go backwards
