My MIL is Irish Catholic and was still in Ireland when JFK was elected. She told me they were listening to election returns in Ireland and there was a feeling that "one of them" had made it. I think it is hard for us to realize how big of a deal that was given we have been raised in a much more secular age where just the mention of church makes people in certain quarters look down their noses.
