There is an old parable/joke that goes something like this. Great rains were forecast and rather than evacuate as recommended a fellow said I have endured many such storms, so I am staying put. Before long, his house was flooded up to the second floor and some neighbors came along and said we have room, join us in our boat and the fellow responded, God will save me, I’m staying put! Now the fellow was sitting on his rooftop for the water levels were threatening that too and a helicopter rescue came by and the fellow responded to their offer of help with God will save me, I’m staying put! As the follow was gasping his last breaths he cursed God saying why have you forsaken me this time, and God responded, “My beloved, three times I tried to save you and you refused. Please acknowledge God helps he who helps himself – some of the responsibility and accountability is always on you.”
