Most hospitals discharge patients as soon as possible because insurance will not pay for extended stays, which is why they are discharged to nursing homes or rehab. If they are discharged home, they end up right back in the hospital. Usually nursing homes and rehab make their money while the patient is there, but they may also have received the extra COVID death payments.
