But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. — James 1:22

One of the biggest challenges of my career as a leader has been in trying to explain things to other people. I’m often left with details about circumstances and situations that I must explain, even if I was not the one making the decision. Many times, those explanations involve situations that I don’t agree with.

It is so difficult to explain something to someone that you don’t believe in. Your face will show it, and your actions will show it. You will find yourself giving uninspiring talks, attempting to get everyone to buy into what you are saying. In the end, no one will believe in it because you don’t believe in it. That is not something that only applies to being a leader but to other areas of life.

When we find ourselves in situations where we do not believe in something, we put forth little effort. We may go through the motions, but we don’t try. We may say the right things, but we don’t necessarily mean them. The sad thing is that’s the way many Christians are living and existing in their Christian life.

I recently read a statement by Leonard Ravenhill that said one day, someone will pick up a Bible, read it, and believe it. In doing so, they will embarrass everyone else because we believe that we have to explain everything in it when the most important thing is believing it. There’s a tremendous challenge in those words.

As you reflect today, do you believe the words of the Bible wholeheartedly? It’s not a book that we can pick and choose the things we like and don’t like. God gave us His word to believe and then obey. It’s much easier to be a doer when you believe in what you are doing.
