Can we have a thread about what the hell to do right now?
🗣️ DISCUSSION 💬
First of all, I'm an idiot when it comes to anything financial. I know many of you aren't. What is the safest thing to do with the money (fiat) that we do have right now? Leave it in our local bank? Credit union? Keep it as cash in my sock drawer? Also, the money in my 401k? Switch it over to bonds or something else I don't fully understand? Any thoughts from someone who's been paying better attention to these things than I?
Always rotate your preps so nothing goes out of date. Remember that most foods last for a good while past the "best by" date. They may lose nutrients and not taste quite as good, but as long as the cans are intact and not rusted, they are probably good.
I have a large room with shelves. I use it as a grocery store. I need another bottle of honey. Go to storage and pick one up. Also, be sure to stock up a lot of the forever preps, such as sugar, salt, honey, and beans. Beans can be cooked after many years of storage. An instant pot helps with that, if you have some power. I use canning jars for the sugar, salt, and beans. I also seal some of the beans in Fresh-Saver bags.
In case the power fails, you should get a pressure canner and supplies so you can save your frozen food as it thaws out. The last time I checked at Walmart, they had an unusually large stock of canning supplies. I have an American Standard pressure canner. It's the Cadillac of canners. It has a machined lid, so it doesn't require a rubber gasket that wears out. You just smear a dab of cooking oil on the top before putting on the lid. That canner will really last multiple lifetimes.
Go ahead and plant some of each type of seeds, even if you're not ready to have a full garden yet. Let everything mature and go to seed. Then save the best of those seeds. Next year, if any volunteers come up, save seeds from them, as they will grow better in your microclimate.
