...from AZ to WA. My mom just suggested that I should get the clot shot - which is not an option - to avoid any 'trouble' on the road while staying at hotels etc.

Are there any precautions that I should take, like avoiding certain areas (other than SD, LA, SF, and Portland) and should I be worried/on the lookout for anything in particular?

I'd be more concerned about immigrant//border jumper filled motels/hotels when you are looking for places to sleep ...
