Formerly a detective and security agency. Known mostly for their union busting activities post civil war. Depending on who you ask, they’re ruthless thugs and killers or a heavy handed (but often said to be necessary) private security group who didn’t mind getting their hands dirty.
The truth, as it often is, is somewhere in the middle. At times they were the hired goons doing the dirty work of the elites, at other times they hunted outlaws and were used to safely guard cargo (mostly gold or money) on dangerous routes.
That's what I've heard as well. More than anything, they seem like some unscrupulous mercenaries. Sort of depends on who hired them and which job their are on, as far as the good vs bad part.
Like with any organization of that age, they've done both good and bad. I'm not trying to absolve their bad actions, but if the Pinkertons were paying me a visit at my home today, I'd treat them the same as any other stranger.
Honestly though, the original tweet is pretty solid advice for anyone who arrives at your house uninvited in this day and age. Maybe ask them why they're at your door before turning too hostile though.
Sorry, what/who are the Pinkertons?

They shot and killed strikers who had clubs and rocks, from what I’ve heard. Not the good guys if true
