It took me a long time to figure that out, but I do think in part it is age related. Until you learn that lesson though, it is discombulating, especially for women because as girls, they are bombarded with "Friends 4ever!" messages. Once you do realize it, it is so much easier, and as you point out, a blessing.
I read something a couple of years ago that FB interrupted the natural flow of friendships. That relationships that would normally have come to the end of their natural life got dragged out. People wonder why their FB friends "change". It's because you really aren't friends anymore.
