I live in FL and zappers do work - but the mosquito control uses mosquito killer vacuum machines that draw the mosquitoes and suck them in [to gather their sample and counts]. Similar devices are now available to the public and can handle a half acre or maybe more. I generally use the [cheaper] low tech zapper light when camping or in the house and just that works pretty good. We have noticed the mosquitoes appear/get worse AFTER the mosquito truck comes around, so if you can stop them from spraying in your area that also might help.
