I'm actually growing my own lettuce for the first time. I watched a short video and in it the person said get a bag of potting soil, lay flat, cut out the plastic to about 2-3 inches of bag left, plant your seeds right in the soil. It's worked great. At first they looked sickly but damn it's booming with different lettuce now. Going to start a second bag of soil. Basically, you just use the bag as your pot. Also, if you have something the same size as the bag to lay it on, you can move it in and outside so the weather doesn't really effect it. That's what I do, out in the morning for sun, back inside in the evening.
