Newly published list shows Catholic sisters ran 74 US Native American boarding schools
The Catholic Truth & Healing website lists 87 Catholic-run Native boarding schools before 1978 across 22 states. Seventy-three of those schools were run or staffed by Catholic women religious.
Good find. This is astonishing. It’s horrific and shameful what they did in this part of history to the native Americans. I recently started going down this rabbit hole. They forced NA kids into these schools, forced them to assimilate, lose their language and culture and taught them how to be servants, for the most part. They had terrible living conditions and abuse, torture in some cases and many documented deaths. It’s just... WTF!?! kind of history, you can’t believe this happened but it did, also in many locations in Canada.
Also... you never seem to hear the native Americans running around screaming “reparations” much, huh? But if anyone deserves it- they effing do. Over the past decade or more, the Catholic Church adult victims of child abuse and molestation have been coming forward and suing the crap out of the church so they’ve been pretty busy (and diocese’ declaring bankruptcy) dealing with those things, never mind helping to reconcile the terrible things that happened to Native Americans.
Paramount TV show 1923 goes into this showing all the horrors these young Indian girls faced. It’s a prequel to Yellowstone
I’ve seen it. Really good series. That’s kind of what got me interested in this subject. I’m Catholic- never learned about the “Indian schools.” Horrific.
Watching it now. Good show. Less woke BS than the previous two so far.
This is just another example of why I get pretty worked up every time I hear some Leftist talk about reparations.
There isn't a person alive that was a slave or owned a slave but there are plenty of Indians alive that survived these boarding schools.
Excellent point!
