You have outlined the motives of Pelosi but let me suggest the motive of the other individual, Senator McConnell. Key members of his caucus were prepared to break with him and support questioning the election. Had that gone forward, he would likely have been ousted as leader or at the least had his authority severely curtailed. Regardless of the success or failure of the election protest, he would have been diminished but as it turned out, he emerged more powerful than ever.
