Could they have used it to get a lot of people to believe he was secretly plotting as a dictator? given that's what they were saying all along.

So instead of feeding into their narrative he stepped aside to allow the country to watch Biden talk about making lists of Trump voters, packing the Supreme Court, inflation etc etc.
