Not treason but espionage. Treason is very, very strictly defined in US law. A lot of people misunderstand that. You need to be in a declared war. The last treason convictions go back to WWII.
So even though we were Cold War with the USSR, they could not be tried for treason.
Also they were tried in federal court, not a military tribunal. Even though some of the crimes went back to when Julius Rosenberg was in the military.
They were both executed for treason. I was a child, but it sure made an impression on me that has stayed with me a life time.
