If testing equipment couldn't tell it apart and all they had to show that it existed was some stock photo created on a computer, how are we certain it's different? Especially when people described symptoms as coughing, runny nose, fever and they acted like it was a new disease. People even talked about having a few sniffles and calling it a mild case of covid. I was reading a pre- covid book where some guy was helping a patient because he lost his sense of smell because of the flu. Anyways, that's my take. I was so annoyed during the whole duration of the covid years.
