The best thing the America consumer can do for themselves is grow a garden, and learn to can. Put away in season enough to last until the next growing season.
Even the folks selling at the farmers markets are often using pesticides, and other chemicals. The only way to know you are getting non-contaminated food is to grow it yourself.
Americans did this for decades before it became to convenient to just run down to the grocery store. Big ag and their partners in government has all but buried the small farmer, and they do not have your best interest in mind. Their only loyalty is to their bottom line.

Amen! Gardens do not have to take a lot of room. People should start with their favorite vegetable, berry, herb and go from there. Trade excess with others who grow items.
We have Walmart$ closest, Albertsons$$$ & Kroger$$ but far (merging ~March 2024). So, wuddya do? Shop ur wallet.
A post the other day showed that the company that owns Food Lion in the Southeast is doing the same crap. We have one very close but never shop there because their prices are outrageous.
Gee, if only there were farmers markets in big cities. Especially in summer. For some reason they all shut down. Likewise when your city has decided to stack people in apartments, it's not too helpful to advise that everyone have a garden.
