I started hearing about the abuse of children by the catholic church more recently, last 10 years or so, rather than during the time of John Paul II. I suppose I was at attending a catholic school during his time as pope, so I wasn't likely to hear about it...

I know that's always been somewhat of an open secret. We had the royal commission into catholic priest sex abuse of children in Australia and then a report released in 2014, I guess that's when it became a more mainstream topic in my life.
