I think self defense is accepted so long as you are keeping someone else from imposing authority over your own free will. I think this is key for not accumulating negative karmic debt. Respect others and life in general, but be willing to protect your own life as the precious experience that it is. I have come to terms that evil is simply the polar opposite of good, both necessary for balance, and free will to exist.
