My father served in the US Navy twice and never learned to swim. He faked the swimming test. He made darned sure we all learned at a very young age, though.
Ha! My dad went in during Korea. Went through sub training and could walk on the bottom. Allegedly. Never swam. Ended up on a destroyer.
Surely they knew? LOL Daddy was all over the Pacific during WWII and I'm not sure where all during Korea.
My father-in-law was a teacher, then a principal until he retired. Somehow, he pulled all this off without ever reading a book in his life.
I don't know how old he is, but my high school was named for a woman who taught from the age of 16 and never finished high school herself. One of the other schools there is named for another woman who taught for decades starting when she was a teenager. I think she finished high school but certainly neither ever went to college. School systems with low standards are nothing new.
