Lincoln literally destroyed the spirit of the Union. The nation went from States United voluntarily to some sort of proto-empire controlled from Washington.
It's not clear that a voluntary union of states could have survived the tumultuous times that followed anyway, and the empire Lincoln built obviously has way more geopolitical power. The union before Lincoln would have never become the world's hegemon in the same way and the world would be very different. Perhaps much worse.
Anyway, it's strange that the guy, siting on his throne in Washington, isn't a more controversial figure.
He should have let the south split off. States have the right to leave the union if the bill of rights is no longer being upheld. He’s a murderer.
He isn’t as controversial as you would think he should be because of the way he and the civil war are portrayed in public school.
