Why would we consider a single celled organism "life" on mars, but not a growing human in the womb?
If all we cared about is consciousness, then there would be no penalty for murdering a person in a coma.
You would have a hard time defining when life begins other than conception, when a whole new DNA profile is formed.
We do know that the heart beat is detectable at about 22 days (5-6 weeks). But even using that as a standard cut off date for abortion is considered ultra restrictive by the left whom want zero limits.
