I wonder if that’s dry wood they’re referring to (like what you burn in fireplaces) because I would assume that living tree wood would be even harder to ignite with just heat. Then again I would guess that it’s mostly brush - dried undergrowth and dried grasses - common in warm weather climates during the summer that would catch fire first and ensuing flames would burn hot enough to start trees burning.
In any case my gut feeling is that, while there are natural causes for some fires, most of the large-scale fires that rage in America and across the world are started by arsonists. Too many of these malevolent, violent beasts have been caught for these crimes to make me believe that arson comprises a minority of these blazes.
Edit: Thank you for the article. Good to use facts when trying to talk to clymate fanatics (even if they don’t want to listen to actual data).
Gets dry as hell here and amazingly you can try your best to burn brush etc and you can’t, humidity is a huge factor. Hence the need for acceleration like charcoal and gas..
Unlikely the reason when it’s in 3-4 main distinct areas in Maui and also on a couple of the other islands. The POS violent marxist thugs love to sow destruction and misery. Here’s one of the feral animals in Italy…
The native Hawaiians (who aren’t psychopathic, sadistic marxists) would know better than to wing their cigarette into dry brush. That said, I lived in California for awhile and once saw an idiot in the car in front of me flip his cigarette butt into the parched median, saw more than once medians lit up on fire from what I’m sure was the same behavior. So, to your question …. Yes, there are also careless idiots who would do that.

It'd have to be hundreds of degrees hotter to have a fire caused by heat alone.

exactly, something to actually catch and feed a flame enough for it to get hot.
