Tourism photo. I think TRD was researching locations of the various tunnels (using the long-lat info available) and then checking them against the map locations of the varying fires, not using the tourism/location info thumbnail photos as evidence of fires coming from those tunnels.
The closest listed one to Lahaina appears to be the Kaua’ula Tunnel at 3.17 miles away (I haven’t checked the others) so I’m not sure how accurately (or if) all these tunnels synch up with all the fire locations. Worth exploring, but I’m running out of steam (tired) so perhaps someone else will verify.
.
Here’s some pics of caves… (btw, notice I’m referencing caves not tunnels)
And an interesting note from the above MauiHacks site…
“… SEA CAVES… Princess Caves… Over the years there are many sites and attractions on Maui that are no longer accessible to the public.
Sadly, the Princess caves have been permanently closed for years for safety reasons. There are gates in place and a sign that says the legend of Princess Popoalaea is no longer there. Do not trespass! …”
I actually had looked it up when I wrote my previous comment, didn’t think it was worth including. Basically, the little red shrimp are probably no longer amassing in that spot periodically (or so they’re claiming) is my guess — and they apparently don’t want anyone near their princess caves. That begs the question “Why?”.
They think the lights in the ceiling of the tunnel is fire? The pics are all the same pic.

Quite protective of those Princess caves, eh?
What is “the legend of Princess Popoalaea?”. How can a “legend” disappear? Is the “legend” tangible?
I get your point, and like your reply, but how can anyone believe that a legend is no longer somewhere?
Genuinely want to know.

Edit: That was a good question about legends, btw.
