Don't have any theories but maybe it wasn't a cow knocking over a lamp post that caused Chicago to burn for 3 days.

It doesn't help that hot weather including heavy winds helped fuel that fire.
But at the same time, some warships may have shot flaming cannonballs and other debris into Chicago to help fuel the fire. Also, almost everything was wooden structures and some bankers likely wanted clear land to build new buildings including the first skyscrapers.
