I believe a gas leak this bad would have been detected before it blew....speculation time...I suggest the occupants were gone before detonation and the explosion was part of a cover up.
Rocket yes. Hollywood explosion no. Unless it was leaking gad and filled the basement. But they said they were aware thst the heater was on the fritz. A gas leak is pretty elementary to a plumber. Not buying water heater story
I've seen water heaters launch like a water rocket but this was bomb plain and simple too much energy on display for a water heater mishap.
