Why would we do that when Okinawa is SO much closer to China and Guam is closer than Hawaii? We already have a military presence in both those places, so why build a new, EXPENSIVE base on distant Hawaii when we could simply enlarge the bases we already have on Guam or Okinawa, MUCH closer to China?

Every island is defended in some way. There are nuclear missile silos in Kauai pointing toward the east that have been there for 60+ years. Kihei Maui became popular with dod and air force in the 90s due to its protected nature. They both have bases there in Kihei.
