I wonder if there are legal distinctions between an alias and a pseudonym? Or are they the same thing? I know they did this to avoid incriminating messages showing up in FOIA requests, but are there federal laws or statutes prohibiting the use of an alias?

Good question. I doubt there are laws that prohibit the use of a alias. I suspect the content of the messages is where we may find the real crime or crimes.
