NATS - the national air traffic controllers - issued a statement at 15:15 BST to confirm that engineers had 'identified and remedied the technical issue'.

The outage took place on a Monday.

So my best guess (because it happens time and time again) is that NATS did a software upgrade over the weekend which they completely screwed up because they hadn't done enough testing.

Sorry, cockup - not conspiracy (Russia or otherwise!).
